In his signature style, Musk hinted at the idea with a meme on the social media platform X, featuring a double-entendre that plays on both cryptocurrency and politics.
The post showcased what appears to be an AI-generated image of Musk sitting behind a desk with a placard reading “D.O.G.E.”, which stands for “Department of Government Efficiency.” The image was accompanied by the text “Department of Government Efficiency.”

Following Musk’s post, Dogecoin saw a 24-hour peak, though it remained below the highs of the past week at the time of this article’s publication.
Trump’s “efficiency vision” inspires Musk’s support
Trump has recently pledged to establish a government efficiency commission tasked with conducting a comprehensive financial and performance audit of the federal government and recommending substantial reforms.
Musk retweeted a video of Trump’s announcement with a comment expressing that such a commission is “badly needed.” While Musk showed support for the initiative, he did not explicitly state that he would take on an official government role.

Elon’s potential involvement with Trump sparks speculation
The seriousness of Elon’s potential involvement or whether this media-driven back-and-forth holds any substance remains unclear. Trump’s remarks about the co-founder and CEO of Tesla agreeing to lead the task force were framed in a context suggesting that “he’s not very busy.”
Trump stated that since Elon is not very busy, he has agreed to head that task force. Trump continued to say that if he has the time, he’s a good one to do it, and he has agreed to do it.
The comment about Musk being “not very busy” may have been made in jest. Musk, who is currently the CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI, and owns Neuralink, The Boring Company, and X, has been notably active. In recent months alone, he’s been embroiled in a high-profile conflict over the ban of X in Brazil, accepted a challenge to physically fight Venezuela’s Nicolas Maduro, and renewed his lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman.
